Why is original art so expensive?

Keep in mind, most people are willing to pay a handyman $40 an hour for their service. Most artist producing high quality art will spend between 60 - 150 hours on each piece. this time is split between planning, lay out, underpainting, drawing out the lay out, between 3 - 7 layers of paint, then varnishing the final piece. the less expensive “original art” you see in tourist destinations or art stores are “original art” but not “one of kind art”. they will produce the same piece dozens of times allowing the artist to finish each piece quickly.

Are art prints limited to how many are produced?

Prints can either be “open edition” or “limited edition”. “limited Edition” prints are limited to the number identified, typically between 20 and 100 prints. if the print does not specify “limited” or “open” it is most likely an “open edition” print, which means there is not specified number which can be printed. “limited Edition” prints are more expensive since there will never be more printed once they reach the limit.

Linocut is the process of taking a “block” of material (wood, linolium, etc.,) and carving out the block. ink is added to the block, paper is pressed to the block then removed to produce a print. if a linocut has several colors the artist has printed several layers. the artist can carve out several blocks with different designs for their prints or they can use one block. Using one block to do several colors is known as a “Reductive Linocut”. the block is cut out further for each new layer.
