#7 Open Range - R 2003

Kevin Costner, who doesn't want to talk about his past, and Robert Duvall are cattlemen driving their herd through "open range". The third member of their group gets beat almost to the point of death in a little town that doesn't take kindly to "free grazers". They have to head to town in an attempt to save their friend's life and end up confronting the men responsible for the assault. Costner’s character has to revisit a lifestyle he thought he left a long time ago.

#6 The Outlaw Josey Wales - PG( probably rated PG-13 today) 1976

I listen to these bearded duck hunters podcasts and they say this is THE GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME. Well I can't give it the greatest of all time but top 10 western for sure. Clint Eastwood's character's family is murdered by a rogue unit of the Union army. So, he joins the Confederates to get revenge on the blue coats. He refuses to surrender and kills a couple of blue coats in the process. He now is an outlaw with a bounty on his head.

Maverick.jpg

#5 Maverick - PG 1994

this movie made in '94 is a remake of the late '50 TV show with the same name. Mel Gibson is a poker player heading to a big tournament on a riverboat but has to collect money from everyone who owes him so he can buy in. This is an upbeat movie with a few twists and turns that will keep you smiling. A side note, James Garner has a major role in the movie but was the original Maverick in the '50s.
